Coming tomorrow: more closet cleaning
Just a head’s up. Tomorrow I’ll be posting a few more items as part of my winter closet cleaning. I’m photographing them tonight. They’ll include:
Allen Edmonds Kenwood size 10D in tan (bought new, worn three times, not stretching in the toe like I thought they would)
Martin+Osa khaki chinos, 36x30 (marked 34x30, but vanity sizing was too large for me)
MS&Co grey moc...

Ties for sale!
Hey everyone, I’m cleaning out my closet and thought I’d offer up some of my neckties for sale. Prices include shipping in the U.S. (non-U.S. will be extra). I take PayPal. If you want to buy one, then e-mail me first at kiyoshimartinez@gmail.com.
These are all ties that I’ve worn previously, except this purple one below. All are in good condition and there’s nothing wrong...

$80 at Park & Bond for $40 at Gilt City
Big ups to stylepoints with this tip.
The title says it all. Essentially Gilt is selling Gilt credit. Get it while it’s hot. If you aren’t already a Gilt member (although I can’t imagine anyone who reads my tumblr wouldn’t be) feel free to join using my referral link.

afistfulofstyle:
Seconded. I am a huge Halloween fan and every time I read “just wear a suit” and call it something I want to strangle my computer. That’s just dressing up, not Halloween.
If you don’t want to celebrate, don’t. But be warned, if this is your attitude on an occasion when you’re supposed to be cutting loose:
Sure, you stand out, but at least you don’t look like you were...

Anonymous asked: Just wanted to tell you that if you taper the 501s from the inseam (like all tailors do, no idea what kind of tailor would taper a leg from the outside seam) you will have a tapered leg and the original width of the selvedge

Anonymous asked: Gray/Brown/Blue is the classic menswear palette. Are there any guidelines for ways this can or cannot work? I mean, gray wool pants and a brown blazer can look good. What about the reverse though, brown pants and gray jacket? Is there anything like a "pants should be darker than jacket" rule that I don't know?

Anonymous asked: I have a question about cold-weather wear. I recently moved from Miami to Philadelphia and I'm really cold. I have a great wool overcoat that I got second-hand, but I have a feeling I'll look a little silly wearing it in October. I've been trying to get by with just a sportcoat and a sweater, but I was wondering if you could recommend something in between. (for reference, I too...

Anonymous asked: I've read that the shoulder seam on a jacket should fall right around where my shoulder ends. My shoulder falls in a gentle slope away from my neck, then hits an abrupt point at the end of my (shoulder?) bone, then curves out. Does my shoulder end where the bone ends, or at the outermost part of the curve just below? (Does that make sense?) Second, when my jacket is buttoned, what's the...

zombiecuddle asked: Hey man, quick tailoring question. Is $40 to let out the sleeves on a peacoat too much? The guy seems reasonable and I'm willing to pay a little on the high end since I'll probably have more jobs for him in the future and want to develop a relationship with someone who does quality work, but I want to make sure I'm not getting gouged and I remember you had some major work done on a...

Anonymous asked: Hey Silentist. If you had time can you discuss porportions for proper fit of a jacket? I just thrifted a couple jackets to start messing around with tailoring. To be specific I purchased 5 camel hair sports coats (for 25 bucks!) The top botton (once buttoned) have different place points. Some closer to my belly button some a bit higher. Any advice would really help. - Thanks for the help. Drew
Anonymous asked: Basic question for you. When something has a leg opening of 16", is that the same as 8" just measured differently?

brian-m asked: While looking on ebay for a heavy winter blazer I've come across a lot of options that end up selling for $10 or less. I am hesitant not because they are cheap, but because it is a brand I don't know anything about. If it is my size and that cheap and I know nothing about the brand but like the look, do you think I should just go for it and cross my fingers?

Anonymous asked: Getting married in April next year and we are thinking of suits rather than poorly fitted rental tuxes. Suggestions on an appropriate grey suit? I'm 6'2", 185 lbs, 42 long suit size. Would be looking for something that I could continue to wear after the wedding.

Anonymous asked: I just bought my first pair of selvage 501's which I love, but the leg opening is a bit too wide. Can you recommend what to say to my tailor about tapering width? I have zero experience with asking for a taper and I want slim, but not "full-Seinfeld".
Anonymous asked: This is going to sound real creepy but were you at The Aviary last night? If not, someone who looked just like you was there.

slothbearwolf asked: as far as ramen budgeting goes- the one thing that i'd likrecommend is 501s as replacement for serious jeans (quality denim is like the single most expensive piece of a non-suiting wardrobe in my experience) is tailored 501s. Besides maybe gap 1969 (which i've no first hand with), most mid ranged price denim (jcrew etc) is terribly marked up and generally not worth it. 501s tend to be of...

brian-m asked: I know it is almost winter, but maybe that means it is the right time to buy white pants. I had a pair, but they were horrible so I got rid of them and want to upgrade. Any suggestions? Gilt has some Acne white jeans for around $80 I think.

prodigal-punk asked: Have you tried any of the Uniqlo sweaters? Supposed to be good quality, but the fit is of concern as they would have to be bought using that new shopping service website, so returns could be tricky.
Anonymous asked: yeah my life is pretty hard for style. My eye says "get it" and my body says "GOOD LUCK TRYING TO FIT ME LOLOLOL" anyways, do you have any recommendations despite those measurements? some college kid could afford? (I feel like you get asked that a lot, sorry) Thanks man!

Got questions? Ask ‘em now because it’s probably going to be a long day of not a lot going on at work.
I also went back and updated some of the questions that were asked last night, so take a look at that, too.
Finally, I’m working on that ramen-noodle budget post in between lusting after those suede ROTM dub monks.

Anonymous asked: I noticed you suggested in an earlier post that an about to be grad student should start wearing ties. I know you later suggest wearing a jacket, but what are your thoughts on shirt, tie, without the jacket? At Put This On it's one of the 25 rules you don't break. However I (also a student) have been recently prone to wearing well-fitted shirts with skinny ties, and was wondering how big...

I’m literally sitting at work with nothing to do and no idea when I’ll be able to head home (that’s government for you). So, if you’ve got a question, then you might as well ask it.
EDIT: OK, finally done and headed out, but if you leave a question, then I’ll get to it tomorrow when it’s slow.

Anonymous asked: Hey, love the blog! I'm studying in Taiwan right now, but when I return I'll be at a top grad school. I'll be a TA/TF, and I've heard that a big challenge (especially in humanities departments, vs. business or law) will be distinguishing myself from the undergrads.
