When do you think that extra-slim black ties are appropriate? I recently received one as a gift and I still can't decide if I like it. I'm not sure how to wear it.
Black ties are tough to work into the rotation. They’re an extremely formal element, typically reserved for funerals. Obviously, they probably can work for people who want to just wear a black suit out at night to look cool at the club — or whatever — but I’d consider that a more “trendy” thing than a “stylish” thing.
The other thing you have working against it is the width. It’s hard to justify a super skinny tie unless you’re wearing jackets with super skinny lapels, which is also hard to justify. And if it’s too skinny, then I think it’ll look a bit too ridiculous — especially if you’re wearing anything but a point collared shirt as wider spread collars will look weird with such a small knot. Also, you’ll probably want your collar points to be shorter, too, but shorter collars tend to increase the likelihood of collar gap I’ve found in some cases.
I think skinny black ties and black suits can look cool, but typically you probably have to be one bad-ass dude in a movie (probably by John Woo or Quentin Tarantino) to pull it off.
Your best way around this would be to maybe wear it surrounded by casual clothing, like a grey cardigan or v-neck sweater, white button-down collar shirt and dark denim.

I have a two-inch black tie that looks great with a light-grey slim suit. I don’t know how slim yours is, but there’s the risk of looking too trendoid if the lapels and tie are below 2-2.5”. As always, proportion proportion proportion.
