I am pretty excited and relieved to announce that the book I’ve been working on is finally up on Kickstarter and taking pre-orders. During the process I had the good fortuned of working with photo editor Melissa Catanese and designer Elana Schlenker - both people whose skill can only help improve the final piece.
See Again and Again here.

A former classmate and co-worker of mine has a Kickstarter up for his photo book about Christchurch, New Zealand, where he traveled to document the area one year after the earthquake. Peter is a photographer, journalist and all-around extremely nice person based in Chicago and it’s been interesting to see what projects he’s worked on since knowing him at the student paper in college.
His Kickstarter is just under $250 away from being funded with just 16 hours left as I type this.
I’ve backed this to buy a book ($48), and if there’s 5-6 more backers like me out there then it gets printed. If you can, then please help tip this project over!

I’m co-hosting this shindig.  Good music, good food, good drinks, and of course, good suits.  How can you go wrong?  If you’re in Chicago, you really have no excuse.

Everyone in the Windy City should hit this up tonight! They’ve been putting a lot of effort into planing it, and you can’t ever complain about free food and drinks. Check it out if you’re in Chicago.

If you’re good you can take Kiyoshi’s place on my semi-regular team.

Don’t feel the need to live up to my trivia abilities. Given my past performances, you’ll likely surpass them.

Proper Suit Chicago Office Launch Party — If you’re in Chicago next week, then stop by the new office for Proper Suit. They will be having some delicious food and intoxicating beverages for you to consume while you can meet the co-founders and learn more about them. It should be a fun time.
They’ve asked that if you plan to attend that you RSVP (it helps a lot with planning), so please consider doing that. I’ve hung out with the founders quite a bit and they’re eager to meet Chicagoans who are obsessed and excited about tailored clothing.

To my fellow Chicagoans:

Dockers is coming through Thursday and Friday with a gigantic trailer showcasing their spring alpha khakis.

  • There will be complimentary shaves and cuts from Joe’s Barbershop
  • The first 50 visitors each day who say “Khaki Rules” get a free pair of Alpha Khakis. And let’s face it, you say crazier things during the course of your day, i.e. “OMQ ______ liked my vine” etc.
  • GQ Executive Stylist, Brett Fahlgren will be in attendance Thursday 12pm-2pm to hang and talk about the spring line.

- Thursday 11am – 6pm: Pioneer Court (Michigan ave. between Illinois and the river)

- Friday 12pm-7pm: One Financial Place

Come and hang and get pants. and a shave. and then go to a bar instead of going back to work.

and then go to another bar.

throw out your phone when everyone starts texting you “WHERE R U?”

order cheese fries.

order a shot of vodka.

buy a ticket to california.

and never come back.

Last week was the Jack Spade watch collection launch here in Chicago and I’m certain a good time was had by all. Thanks to GQ and everyone who came out. It was a pleasure to host.

If you couldn’t make it (or even if you did) I implore you to check out the Jack Spade sample sale right now. They’ve got a lot of cool stuff for 50-75% off.

Independence Anniversary Party in Chicago — If you’re in the Windy City, then you should stop by Independence this Thursday (March 14th). Founder George Vlagos (also the gentleman behind Oak Street Bootmakers) sent me this invite today to pass on and let you know there will be beer, wine and an in-store performance from Hanna Ashbrook. Looks like a fun time!

If you’re in Chicago and need a hot shave or haircut for New Year’s Eve (or just in general), then consider checking out Haberdash EDC, which has a variety of haircut and shave packages for NYE day from their barber Charles Lenox. Just be sure to book an appointment ahead of time as limited time slots are available.

I am currently looking for good tailor in Chicago. Do you have any suggestions you can throw out?

- Asked by certifiedholic

I’ve had all my alterations done by Paul Chang Custom Tailors in the Loop on the corner of LaSalle and Lake inside the Accenture building. I’ve been going to see Paul for the past 4-5 years.

One of the things I always stress to people who want to visit a tailor is to learn how to communicate exactly what you want. Bring photos, if you must. Open up and talk with them about how you like things — but listen to their feedback (if they don’t offer it, ask). Tailors aren’t mindreaders. They’re skilled at executing, but you have to provide the instructions. So, keep that in mind.

(This reminds me I need to do a FAQ section as this keeps coming up!)
