I've always been drawn to the look of a dark brown/taupe saddle oxford similar to the Bass Buchanon shoe - it looks somewhat preppy and retro. Are these in style, and what do I wear with it?

I’m not sure how on/off trend saddle shoes are, but who cares. It’s about personal taste. If you like it, then wear them.

I think the white/navy saddles look great in the summer, especially with seersucker (either as a full suit or if you’re wearing the jacket and trousers separately with other elements).

I can see the dark brown/taupe looking good in the fall with denim, a tweed jacket (probably on the brown, cream end of things instead of the black/grey/white). They’d also look good with cords and moleskin trousers. In the warmer months, I think they’d look interesting with a casual suit, like a khaki chino suit.

Personally, I think they’d look a bit odd though with a navy suit or chinos — but I can’t put my finger on why.

ADDING thingsthatpleaseme replied:

By their nature, they’re bluchers which will look a bit off with a “city suite” like navy, anyhow. They’re definitely casual shoes, but I could see them being great with the right chinos. A suit would be a no go unless tweedy or something.

How do you feel about navy Bass Brocktons for seasons other than summer? I feel like they're good for fall, but perhaps I am wrong.

The only bucks I would limit to summer (and spring) wear would be white bucks. The rest of the colors? Go nuts.

Cosign on Bass Binghamton? They're on 6PM for $19 (It won't let me link it)
They got them in my size in three colors, but they don't have the best reviews at a couple places. Seems like a steal though.

Thanks

Those Bass Binghamton chukka boots do look pretty tempting at that price. The shoes might have polished/corrected-grain leather, but it’s tough to tell. If you think the $7 shipping cost is something you’re willing to eat in case they don’t work out, then it’s worth a shot.

G.H.Bass isn’t a company I’d expect miracles in terms of quality at their full retail price, but at that price it’s a decent buy.

Mark McNairy x Bass Chandler Deck Mocassin - do you cosign as an everyday shoe that goes well with different color chinos/khakis

I’m guessing you’re talking about these at Urban Outfitters? I’m a fan of boat shoes in general and think they work well when you can wear them in sockless weather. For cooler weather, not so much. Regardless, yes, they look great with chinos. I wore my boat shoes almost daily last summer.

In regards to the actual shoe mentioned, I’d probably get something cheaper like Sperry or Sebago, both of which tend to show up on sale quite a bit if you check out Endless, Piperlime, Zappos, etc. I picked up my Sperrys for $40 at Marshalls. Take that $80 savings and pick up something else, like a nice tie a Kent Wang. The soles are going to wear out eventually on those anyway, so I find it hard to justify paying that much for them.

Just in time for warm weather and holidays comes this season’s collaboration between Mr McNairy and G.H. Bass. Based on classic Bass Weejun silhouettes, this SS11 range uses the finest materials, incorporating Mark McNairy’s astute eye for detail to create a series of shoes that combine Bass’ famous lines with classic American detailing.
Available at End Clothing (Non-EU customers save 20%).

Just want to point out that these are “corrected grain” leather shoes. No thanks.
Put This On explains the pitfalls of corrected grain leather:

Besides the tacky finish, corrected grain creases more severely (because of the added layer of plastic-y chemicals on top of the leather), breathes more poorly, and ages badly, as the finish can be damaged or can even flake off of the leather below.
