It’s on sale: Gallo socks — Exquisite Trimmings has pairs of the Gallo socks on sale right now, and if you’re ordering in the United States, they’re also subtracting VAT (about a 20% reduction). Plus, there’s free worldwide shipping on all orders.

Gallo’s multi-colored striped socks might be best suited for those of you who are looking for something to graduate up from the likes of Happy Socks into over-the-calf hosiery that can be worn with dress trousers. Of course, if you prefer more subtle socks, there’s a few options as well.

I wear a US size 15 shoe, and I need new socks. I need interesting socks: argyles, patterns, horizontal stripes, etc. The problem is, "one size fits all" doesn't work for me. Do you know of any shops that sell nice, interesting king-size socks? Thanks!

Wow. That’s a tough one. A quick search on Styleforum turns up Viccel and Falke as possibilities. Going to have to give you fair warning though: prices are expensive! Definitely worth hunting out deals on eBay.

Marcoliani over-the-calf socks — I never really appreciated the value of nice socks until I had a few pairs. Want to shoot for the stars? Go with cashmere, like the one above. As for what color, navy and charcoal are staples, but I’m a fan of those in the red family to add a bit of personality.

Why don't American men wear socks?

- Asked by Anonymous

Because they stink.

(I crack myself up.)

But, great question. Honestly, it feels great. I own “nice” socks, but during the summer and warmer weather it just feels good to go sockless. Maybe it’s not for everyone, but I think it’s just more or less about that breeze across your ankles.

Or maybe it’s just a perk of not having to rummage around your sock drawer in the morning for a matching pair.

For sale: Pantherella socks

UPDATE: All sold. Thanks!

I have six pairs of unworn, brand new, 100-percent wool Pantherella socks that I’m looking to sell. They are size UK 9-11.5 (Euro 42-48, US 11-14). They’re yours for $70 shipped via USPS and I take PayPal. Email me if you’re interested.

I paid $75.95 for these via Gilt, so I’m taking a bit of loss here. Why am I getting rid of them? Because Gilt screwed up the sizing on their website. They listed the UK size as US sizes and the socks are too big. I can’t return them because I bought these via their waitlist, which is a final sale transaction. Way to go, copywriters.

I’d love to keep them, but they’re truly too big for me. I’m a size 10.5D and after taking one sock, placing it on my foot and it being way too baggy on my foot, I took it off and thought, “Well, damn.” Sizing aside, they’re wonderfully nice socks and dieworkwear was totally right about how sweet these are in texture. I’m kinda pissed I have to sell them and that I could’ve bought the socks in a smaller size back when they were in stock.

I have two pairs each of what Gilt describes as “light steel, air-force blue and dark grey”. They are all over-the-calf socks and the packaging says they’re 100-percent wool, although you should know that Gilt’s esteemed copywriter described them as a 90-10 wool-nylon blend. Who knows what the truth is, but they’re supposedly better than the higher nylon-content blends Pantherella’s using now in current sock stock.

So, if you have big feet and want to surround them in “fine English socks” of wool, email me.

I sent the message that talked about the socks a few days back - I happened to check out Gilt today and lucky me, Happy Socks in the colors I was specifically looking for. Score one for the home team, especially because I get to use my $25 credit.

Good deal. Everyone might want to check out Gilt’s socks page, even if you’re not a fan of Happy Socks, as they have other offerings, too.

And if anyone still needs an invite to Gilt, just click here. (Disclosure, it’s a referral link and I think I get Gilt credit if you buy something.)

Re: WIWT: 03-29-2011

Props to the outfit - a black knit would have been nice as well. Makes me want to go to TheTieBar.com and pick up every color of knit tie they have. Wanted to ask though where you scored those lavender socks? I'm looking for some pastels for this S/S. BB has some but I found they're too thick for S/S. I also saw Cole Haan has some but haven't tried them on yet.

Great blog - keep up the terrific work.

Thanks. I hadn’t considered a black knit (although I do have one), because I usually think of only using it for evenings. Interestingly enough, I was thinking that any neutral-colored tie would work (grey glen plaids, etc.), but black completely slipped the mind. I’ll keep that stored for the future.

As for lavender socks, I got mine from Happy Socks, but they don’t seem to have that color on the site anymore. You could check Nordstrom Rack though, as I often have seen them for $5/pair. Also, Gilt occasionally has sales on their socks, too. If you’re willing to spend more per pair, then give dieworkwear’s post on socks a read for suggestions.

So, I completely ignored all of dieworkwear’s wonderful advice about socks and bought a couple of $5 cotton/nylon pairs from J.Crew’s factory store. They arrived today and for the time being they’ll have to do the trick while I work in the public sector.

Exactly.

It’s funny because it’s true, especially in the Midwest where adults are crossing their fingers for a fat fucking pair of woolies to keep their feet toasty on a lazy winter morning.

No socks under the tree this year for me, but this is very, very true.

Socks

beencaughtsteezing:

Hey style dudes — any thoughts on sock materials? It seems nearly impossible to find something that’s all wool or cotton — instead you get “60% combed cotton 30% acrylic 9% polyester 1% spandex” (Calvin Klein) or worse. Acceptable?

I think most socks are like that, because they need to stretch. Do all-cotton/wool socks exist? Maybe, but I haven’t seen any.

I’m a fan of L.L. Bean’s socks for the winter and Happy Socks otherwise. Also, Howard Yount and the Fine & Dandy Shop have some higher-priced hosiery.

My advice would be to pick something functional for the winter when your toes need warmth instead of style and pick something that matches your style and sartorial flair all other occasions.

Personally, I’m a little bit more budget conscious when it comes to socks, so I try to grab Happy Socks when they’re on sale or at Nordstrom Rack for $5 a pair. When it came to thick socks, I didn’t screw around, however, and ponied up for thick pairs from L.L. Bean, figuring they’ve got that outwear/cold-weather gear nailed down.

Happy Socks on Gilt today — My favorite fun socks are going to be featured on Gilt.com today. They’re being sold in packs of 3 for $19, which is about 33% off the regular price. The downside is that you don’t get to pick which three you get together in a pack.
If you don’t have a Gilt invite, then click here.

Happy Socks — I’m pretty sure that I first heard about Happy Socks from Put This On, but I could be wrong, as many other men’s style bloggers have preached this unisex hosiery online retailer for some time.
I finally took the plunge after suitsandboots mentioned they were 50% off if you bought ten pairs, meaning they clocked in at $5/pair plus free shipping. From the pictures, I was slightly worried they might not be long enough to wear in a dressy environment, but they do just fine.
Are these socks a “must buy”? No. If you’re finding yourself wanting to play it safer, then their bold, multi-colored approach might be a bit too flashy and progressive for you in a button-down office of white shirts and charcoal suits. But, even if you do find yourself in that environment every day, why not put a bit of color into your uniform?
I happen to think their one-color, fire-engine red socks are great for when you’re locked into that white/grey/black neutral world, but the blue and orange ones could work, too.
While it’s still summer and I’m going sockless 95% of the time, I’ve worn these socks a few times and they get the job done. Unfortunately, they’re no longer on sale, but keep them in mind for when they do drop the price again. Given that some places charge $15 and up per pair for argyle socks, $5-10 isn’t unreasonable for dress socks that’ll definitely be unique.
